A new generation of Vandal alums will collect their caps and gowns next week. Fall commencement is set for December 8th on the University of Idaho campus.

Here's the news release set by U of I:

MOSCOW, Idaho – As the fall semester draws to a close, 831 graduates will celebrate their eligibility to walk across the stage and receive University of Idaho diplomas during the 2012 fall commencement ceremony. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 12:30 p.m., in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center.

All degree candidates participating in the ceremony must line up for the procession dressed in their regalia by 11:30 a.m. on the main floor of the Kibbie Dome’s east end. The graduates will earn a total of 858 degrees, with 581 undergraduate, 212 master’s, 4 specialist, 10 law and 51 doctoral degrees.

The commencement address this year will be given by Lynn Baird, dean of Library Services. Baird began her distinguished career at the University of Idaho in 1974 and has held several leadership positions at the library, including: interim dean for Library Services (2006-2007); associate dean for Library Services (2005-2006); head, Access Services (1994-2006); and head, Serials and Acquisitions Department (1978-1993).

“It is such an honor to be a part of commencement and watch students complete their journey after so much hard work and diligence,” said Baird. “As an essential part of every student’s success, providing library services and helping students achieve their goals is always rewarding, but to share this day with them is especially rewarding.”

Baird is an active member and leader in the university community as the Morrill Act Planning Committee co-chair, Leadership Academy facilitator, Leadership Academy task force, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs periodic review committee chair, Interim Associate Vice President/CEO Coeur d’Alene search committee chair, Advisory Group on Information Technology research group chair and University Vision and Resources Task Force, among numerous other university and department committees. She also serves on national and state committees and organizations.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts at University of the Pacific (Raymond College) in 1972. She earned a Master of Library Science degree at the University of Oregon in 1974, a Master of Public Administration at the University of Idaho in 1980 and her doctoral degree in adult and organizational learning in 2010 at the University of Idaho.

This year, honorary degrees will be awarded to alumni Douglas and Arthur F. “Skip” Oppenheimer, brothers from Boise.

Douglas serves as president and Skip serves as CEO of Oppenheimer Companies, Inc. a national food processing, sales, marketing and distribution organization and one of Idaho’s leading corporations.

Both men are active philanthropists. They have used their business skills and connections to focus on economic development, education, arts, health and children's issues.

Concerned about ethical issues in both the media and in business, Douglas and Skip Oppenheimer sought to guarantee that Idaho students and the community at large had the opportunity to engage in programs designed to foster informed ethical decisions through the establishment of the Oppenheimer Ethics Fund and the University of Idaho Oppenheimer Ethics Symposium.

Immediately after the ceremony, the President’s Reception will take place on the main floor of the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center. Family, friends and faculty are invited to enjoy refreshments with President M. Duane and Ruthie Nellis and the new graduates. College banners will designate gathering areas and provide photo opportunities.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is available first-come, first serve; no tickets are required. Additional commencement information, including parking, lodging and maps are available at www.uidaho.edu/commencement/wintercommencement.
