Planting Trees

Planting Trees

If you don't have much of a green thumb, there's help. The City of Moscow Tree Commission is hosting workshops to help you take care of your trees. It's not as simple as you might think. These guys make taking care of your trees look like an art.

Wednesday is the pruning workshop. Yes, a seminar just to learn how to properly cut your trees, when to prune and how to prune, and there's even "small tree training". Interesting. It's September 7th.

The following Wednesday is for planting.

WSU campus police purchase two patrol Segways

Where patrol vehicles can't fit on Washington State University's Pullman campus, Segways will. Campus police will start using the two-wheeled, self-balancing vehicles manufactured by the New Hampshire-based company, Segway Inc.

Two Segways were purchased for campus use around the Terrell Mall and other pedestrian areas. They're stamped with the police logo and feature the ominous red and blue lights. WSU officers hope the Segways will save not only the university money, but also they'll decrease the wear and tear on patrol vehicles.

Nominations for Moscow-based civil award now open

Nominations for Moscow-based civil award now open

The Mayor of Moscow has some tough decisions to make, but this one is just fun. Mayor Nancy Chaney will decide who will receive the Ismat Ara and Abdul Mannan Sheikh Community Unity Award. It's a biennial award that honors a citizen or group committed to unity, diversity, inclusion and human rights.

Ismat Ara Sheikh and Abdul Mannan Sheikh are remembered in Moscow as two citizens who did just that. They were known mostly perhaps for hosting an open invitation to anyone for a community Thanksgiving meal.
